On the Putting Green

Lesson 6 Chapter 6

golf rules course junior golfer

When is a Ball on the Green?

  • Your ball is on the putting green if any part of it touches the green.
  • You can pick it up and clean it, but you must mark its spot first and put it back in the same place.

Fixing the Green

  • You can fix things like:
    ✔ Pitch marks
    ✔ Spike marks
    ✔ Sand or dirt
  • You can’t fix:
✖ Normal course work (like aeration holes)
✖ Natural bumps, weeds, or bare spots

If Your Ball Moves

  • If you or someone else accidentally moves your ball or marker on the green → No penalty! Put it back where it was.
  • If wind or water moves the ball:
    • Already marked & replaced? Put it back.
    • Not marked yet? Play it from where it moved to.
  • If it moves while you swing and you hit it? Play it as it lies.

Ball Against the Flagstick

  • If your ball is leaning on the flagstick but no part of the ball is below the surface of the putting green, and it falls in when you pull the flag out, put it back on the lip. It’s not holed yet!

Ball Hanging Over the Hole

You can walk up and wait 10 seconds to see if it drops in.

  • Drops in within 10 seconds? Great, it counts!
  • Drops in after 10 seconds? It counts, but add 1 penalty stroke.
